May I Recommend?

I can’t even begin to imagine how many books I’ve read in my lifetime. Thousands, probably.  Obviously I’m not going to write posts for them all, but there are definitely titles I don’t want to forget and that I like to recommend to people.  I’m going to take them off of little scraps of paper and put them here.  It’s up to you to find out what the book is about, but these are all books I recommend, so take a chance and see if you’d like them too!

CHILDREN and YA

Gone Away Lake and Return to Gone Away by Elizabeth Enright
The Exiles, Exiles in Love by Hilary McKay–delightful sense of humor, Blanket the dog buying gifts
Name Day, Crystal Tree
The Wonderful Year

ADULT

The Thin Woman by Dorothy Cannell–the start of a mystery series, this is the best
Courting Emma Howe–mail order bride on the frontier
This Body by Laurel Doud–woman dies, wakes up in body of 20something drug addict
Ladies of Missalonghi–gorgeous Australian novel, very thing
A Girl Named Zippy by Haven Kimmel–wonderful memoir, laugh out loud funny
The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio by Terry Ryan–fantastic memoir of woman with drunk husband who supported her 10 kids by winning contests

  1. Hi ‘Bear,

I’m in love with your website and have already recommended it to two others and was about the tell my colleague about it when I came across this list. Sarah, I can’t believe it. Two of my all time favorites are on your list: Courting Emma Howe (and you probably recommended it to me in the first place years ago) and Ladies of Missalonghi.

    Love it. Love you.

    • Janet, first I’m so happy you are reading through! second, YOU are the one who recommended Ladies of Missalonghi to me, ever so long ago. I loved it! Do you know I only recently update my site here to have the new May I Recommend column? Glad it was spruced up in time for new visitors 🙂

You mentioned you have read “Ladder of Years” by Anne Tyler twice. I loved it too. Can you recommend another Anne Tyler book that you liked as much?
    Thank You
    Karen

    • Hi karen, just yesterday I finished the newest Tyler–A Spool of Blue Thread. I liked it A LOT (and am going to write about it today.) it reminded me a lot of ladder of Years.

  3. Hi Sarah
Thank You so much for responding so fast with your recommendation for “A Spool of thread” by Anne Tyler. (Having do to with my request for a book like Ladder of Years.) I just finished Spool of Thread also. I really enjoyed both books also. I’ll be interested to read your review of it. Thank You for all the thoughtful and eloquent reviews you have done on your site. You have good taste in books and you can write really well describing them. You have given me much inspiration and some great ideas on what to read. I’m grateful to you.
Thanks Again for all that you do.
Take good care of yourself and family.
    Best Wishes
    Karen
