Dear Committee Members by Julie Schumacher

committeeFantastic! I love an epistolary novel and this is such an interesting one. Set in the world of academia a creative writing professor writes elaborate and hilarious endless letters of recommendation.  Through the letters you learn how his marriage fizzled, as well as other relationships.  You also learn that after some initial success in publishing he hasn’t been able to repeat it.  The letters are definitely an outlet for his writing ability.  He seems something of himself in a one of his graduate students and is desperate to secure funding, housing, an opportunity for this student, who he believes to be the Next Great Writer.

I was so impressed at how the story came together with characters, background, and threads of continuity, all through letters from one person’s point of view. The ending surprised and moved me. A very enjoyable quick read.
