Block is the author of the fantastic Weetzie Bat books-magical, punky, YA stories set in a shangri-la of California. Barbara McClintock is a lovely illustrator and I’ve especially enjoyed her picture book, Dahlia, about a doll. Together the author and illustrator have created this charming small book about the inhabitants of a dollhouse. The current child in charge of the dollhouse is very unhappy and takes it out on them. The child’s grandmother had cared wonderfully for the dolls and sewed them amazing couture ensembles. These details combined with the detailed drawings are absolutely charming and fantastical. I enjoyed this very much and while it brought Tasha Tudor’s The Doll’s Christmas to mind, the worlds of the dolls and their children are quite different.
