Keep Sweet by Michele Green

Alva Jane lives on a polygamist compound.  Her father is the be all end all, not at all benevolent, and his wives are fearful women who love their children but put themselves and their husband’s word first.  As you read every now and then there are little details that make it clear that the wives are very young women themselves and either clueless or manipulative, and desperate for their husband’s favor.  When a newcomer joins them it opens Alva’s eyes to the outside world and she begins to question her life.  She witnesses the beating of a young wife and when she learns that she is to be married to the same man she becomes desperate to get out.

This was so creepy and fascinating that I just loved it.  It was really horrifying to learn others outside the polygamist community would turn a blind eye to what was going on.
